5. Tohoku University

Tohoku University, Japan’s third Imperial Institution and one of the National Seven Universities, is now placed 77th in the world university rankings and was the country’s first university to admit ladies and overseas students. The institution, which is ranked fifth in Japan, earns outstanding results across the majority of the ten categories, with near-perfect results for those used to judge faculty/student ratio and worldwide research network.

6. Nagoya University

Nagoya University, one of the top seven Imperial Universities, was founded in 1939. Over the years, the institution has attained some of the greatest research standards and has produced about one-third of Japan’s Nobel Laureates in science. Nagoya University, ranked 111th in the world and the nation’s sixth most renowned institution for higher education, with the second-highest score in the top 10 for the faculty/student ratio metric.

7. Hokkaido University

Hokkaido University was the first higher education college to be created as a Sapporo Agricultural College in Japan, and was formed in 1876. It is a member of the Imperial Universities, a group that includes some of the country’s most famous universities and was formed by the Japanese Empire. The country is now rated 128th in the world and eighth in Japan.

8. Kyushu University

Kyushu University, with a history dating back to 1903, is the fourth-oldest university in Japan and, as one of the country’s greatest donors to higher education, is now ranked 126th in the world. In the QS Japan University Rankings, Kyushu University is rated eighth, with the highest score for the indicator that assesses global research networks, followed by faculty/student ratio and employer reputation.

9. Waseda University

Waseda University is located in the middle of Tokyo, Japan’s contemporary yet historic city. This year, it is ranked 208th in the international university rankings and ninth in Japan. 10. Keio University

Yukichi Fukuzawa founded Keio University in Edo (now Tokyo) in 1858 as a school for Western studies, making it Japan’s very first private institution for higher education.
